Corporate Support Days

For those wanting an in-depth understanding of the work the RSPCA undertakes, then the Corporate Support Day at our RSPCA Sydney (Yagoona) Shelter is for you.

The day includes an information briefing about the RSPCA, a tour of the shelter with our trained RSPCA staff, dog-walking and basic obedience training, cat hugging, planting native trees, maintenance of existing garden beds and general presentation of our shelter.

Corporate Support Days are $100 per head – this pool of money pays for the materials used on the day such as plants, soil and mulch; it pays for equipment such as shovels and gloves.

Please note: if your company already donates to the RSPCA through workplace giving then please ask for the fee to be waived.

Corporate Support Days cater for up to 15 people and are held once a month. If you have a small team, we will try to combine you with another group - if this is the case, please contact us to find out an available date.

On the 19th October, I joined with nine of my Citi colleagues in volunteering at the RSPCA's animal shelter. The first half of our day was spent learning about the RSPCA's philosophies, aims and programs. I thought I had a reasonable understanding of RSPCA's services but it was extremely insightful to learn more about their current campaigns. The second half of the day was our chance to get our hands dirty. Each volunteer was given the chance to walk and interact with the dogs, which were all very well behaved, albeit very energetic. We finished the day by cleaning some of the animal shelters and planting a small herb garden.  Overall, it was a great way to learn more about the RSPCA. The RSPCA staff were all extremely knowledgable, welcoming and patient in answering our many questions. Thanks again to the RSPCA for hosting a fabulous day.

Thank you to the teams from Marsh and Credit Suisse, for volunteering their time to the Sydney Shelter on Wednesday 14th September 2011.

The teams enjoyed an informative session about the RSPCA from Mark and later experienced a day in the life of the RSPCA with a shelter tour and dog walking. Team Leader Nicole helped the teams give their dogs some obedience training while the dogs enjoyed treats and socialising.

After the teams interacted with the animals, we put them to work on creating a garden by the new cattery. The teams planted some plants and water the gardens.

A big thank you to Marsh and Credit Suisse for your contribution to improving the shelter and brightening the day of our animals.

Gadens Lawyers - 25 July 2011

gadens-lawyers

A big thank you to the group from Gadens Lawyers who volunteered their time at the Sydney Shelter on Wednesday 24th August. Gadens Lawyers have made a great contribution to the Corporate Support Days by providing pro-bono legal advice and now it was their turn to meet our furry friends and help brighten the shelter with some gardening.

We started the day with Matt from the RSPCA NSW’s Education Team providing information about the work of the RSPCA. This was followed by a shelter tour and some socialisation with the dogs, cats and rabbits.

After lunch the group got to work on some gardening  outside the Poultry Aviary which is now looking great!

MM Works, ANZ and Optus - 15 June 2011

MMWorks, ANZ and Optus

MMWorks, ANZ and Optus1

On Wednesday 15th June, we were joined by groups from printers and direct marketing experts and cupcake day sponsors MM Works, workplace giving partners and supporters from ANZ and Optus for a wet and muddy day at the Yagoona Shelter.

Thank you to all 15 of you who turned up in your wet weather gear ready to go!

The group spent the morning with Mark and Steph from the RSPCA NSW Education team followed by a Shelter Tour including a visit to the cattery and some much loved puppy time. Unfortunately it was too wet for dog walking

After lunch we got busy at the back section of the shelter where brand new dog runs have been built. We planted Australian natives to help brighten the shelter for our animals, staff, volunteers and visitors. The trees provide shade in summer and keep the dogs calm.

Thank you all for your motivation and passion on such a gloomy day!

Back in October 2010 we met a great group of people from Pfizer, 3 of whom promised they’d be back. Well back they came and were joined by 5 more from Pfizer (to make 8 in total) and 2 great blokes from ANZ. The RSPCA NSW welcomed the combined group of 10 with a talk from 2 of our education team (Mark Jeffrey and Matt French) on our campaign for humane food. We then got busy with a tour of the shelter thanks to Catherine and Karen from the RSPCA, some dog walking and cat grooming, lunch and then some essential gardening to make the shelter look that little bit better for animals, staff, volunteers and visitors. Thanks Pfizer and ANZ!

IAGOPTUS

OptusIAG2

Thanks to two corporate groups -  Optus (11 of them) and IAG (4 of them) -  for putting aside a day for all creatures great and small. The project today was planting a corner of the inspector rows and maintenance (pruning, staking) of previous gardening work. All up 2 hours work x 15 people = 30 hours work just like that. The power of team work. Also a couple of volunteers were interviewed for Channel 7’s archives! Thanks to Optus and IAG.

Marsh2

Thank you to ten corporate supporters from Marsh Insurance Company. We got them to walk and socialise the shelter dogs and pat the cats and kittens as well as giving them a tour and a talk about them and the work of the RSPCA. After lunch we helped with the Save Cat Campaign by attaching the tags to the toy mice for distribution the next day in the Pitt Street Mall. So if you got one of the mice, it was thanks to Marsh! We then cleaned and tidied the pocket pet area and the cattery ready for the large number of visitors expected in response to the Save Cat Campaign. All the animals are better for the extra attention and the shelter looks great! Thank you Marsh!

Price Waterhouse Coopers + Suncorp – 19 January 2011

PWC support day

PWC2

The first corporate support day of the year was a lot of fun thanks to a cheerful and hardworking combined group from Price Waterhouse Coopers (11 of them) + Suncorp (3). The group received a talk about the work of the RSPCA, a tour of the shelter, spent time with kittens and then walked and help train the dogs in basic obedience. The afternoon project was more gardening. Thanks to the generosity of Price Waterhouse Coopers and Suncorp we purchased more soil, mulch and plants and  turned an ugly dead bit of lawn outside the adoption row into a smart garden bed full of natives in just 2 hours. The power of team work!

The Trust Company - 15 December 2010

Trust Company

After meeting the great team from The Trust Company when we presented them with the trophy for the corporate Cupcake Day fundraisers of 2010 we invited them to a corporate support day in December. Boy was it hot! Without doubt the hottest corporate support day we have experienced and their uniform was heat absorbing black. Nevertheless the great team of 14  walked dogs and met cats in the morning, had lunch and then got stuck into planting the adoption row so that the native plants create shade and make the shelter look that little bit better for our four and 2 legged friends. Thanks again Trust Company.

Pepsico & Credit Suisse – 17 November 2010

Pepsico

2 brilliant teams - 9 from Pepsico and 3 from Credit Suisse (after a tour of the shelter and dog walking of course) got stuck into our courtyard and the garden that faces the road as you enter the Yagoona, Sydney shelter. We re-stained the courtyard tables to preserve the wood and freshen up its appearance; we revived the courtyard garden bed that needed some love; planted and placed 10 pot plants and then combined to finish off the garden by planting natives to attract birds. It was a great day – we avoided the rain and welcomed back people from Pepsico and Credit Suisse who have now helped us two years running. Thank you to both teams and we look forward to seeing you for a third year!

Pfizer & AAPT - 20th October 2010

Pfizer & AAPT

Pfizer & AAPT 1

A group of 9 from Pfizer and a group of 4 from AAPT combined forces to help us finish off the pocket pet area. After some fun dog walking and cat cuddling the group got stuck into the project and got lots done with time to spare at the end of the afternoon. They planted a garden for the rabbits which will grow fresh vegetables; they planted native bird attracting plants; swept, weeded and tidied the area around the pocket pet area and put together a bench seat for visitors to use when choosing a pocket pet. Thank you Pfizer and AAPT from all the rabbits and guinea pigs.

Lend Lease - 23 September 2010

Lend Lease Corporate Support Days

Lend Lease Corporate Support Days

Lend Lease Corporate Support Days

Lend Lease Corporate Support Days

Each year Lend Lease has a Community Day in September.  Thanks to Karen Collinson, Pippa Hamblett and Peter Sheehan from Lend Lease who arranged a site visit with the RSPCA and agreed upon the ambitious plan to move and re-build the entire pocket pet area. This meant we needed to draw up a plan (thanks to Dave Baxter) and estimate our supplies. Lend Lease ordered and paid for supplies (cement, wood, paint, plants) and sent some carpenters a day early to cement in new fence posts in anticipation of the 40 volunteers and staff from RSPCA who would arrive on the Community Day. The day went off without a hitch, the rain stayed away and the team got to work moving and building and painting and gardening.

By the end of the day we had achieved an incredible amount as can be seen from the photos above. We estimate the savings to the RSPCA NSW from donated time and materials to be $12,000. We all shared a free-range bbq and a tour of the shelter, a visit from the local media and the knowledge that the rabbits and guinea pigs now have an even better chance of re-homing.

Thank you Lend Lease!

Cube, Citigroup & ANZ - 22 September 2010

Team ANZ & Cube & Citigroup  Team ANZ, Cube & Citigroup

A wonderful group of corporate supporters from 3 different companies joined forces this month and helped us re-plant Adoption row number 1. After a morning talk and shelter tour which included stop offs in the cattery and the stables (to see goats, pigs and horses) this large group took some shelter dogs for walks and basic behavioural training in the exercise paddock until the dogs were nicely tired and ready for their lunch.

A quick break for lunch and it was back to work tearing out the weeds in adoption row number 1, re-soiling and planting Australian natives which will grow to provide shade and protection for the dogs and make our shelter more attractive for our staff and visitors. We finished in record time thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of an incredible group of people.

Thanks Cube, Citigroup and ANZ!

Suncorp & IAG - 18 August 2010

Team IGA and Suncorp  Chooky

Our RSPCA Sydney Shelter poultry aviary experienced a wonderful transformation in August when teams from Suncorp and IAG visited to help us with gardening. The group got stuck into the land surrounding the aviary, beautifying the area with pebbles and plants, laying grass and adding a fabulous sand box for the birds to scratch around in!

St George - 4 August 2010

St George

We were able to squeeze an extra corporate support day in at the Sydney Shelter and boy are we glad we did!

An incredible group of 10 from St.George Bank turned up and were raring to go. After a quick chat with animal attendant Michelle about the RSPCA and a tour of the shelter with visits to the pocket pets, cattery and dog kennels we then spent the morning walking and socialising some very happy shelter dogs seen in the photo above. After lunch we then revived the last of the garden beds in the inspectors' dog rows.

Brad Munns from St.George said:

"I just wanted to send you a quick email to say a big thank-you to the RSPCA team. We all found the whole day to be of value and a great experience as we not only gained appreciation as to what the RSPCA does but also the time we spent with the dogs and working on the garden was fantastic."

IAG & Bankwest - 21 July 2010

Bankwest and IAG  Bankwest & IAG

Thanks to the combined efforts of IAG and Bankwest we successfully beautified another garden bed at the shelter (apologies to the members of the group who thought they were doing administrative work and ended up gardening!) Dogs were walked, cats were groomed and an unattractive, overgrown garden bed was replanted with Australian natives, which will not only shield the dogs but improve working conditions for staff and attract Australian birds. Beauty!

Suncorp and AAPT - 16 June 2010

AAPT Corporate Support Team  AAPT Corporate Support Team

The wonderful people at Suncorp and AAPT came to our RSPCA Sydney (Yagoona) Shelter Wednesday 16 June to help us breath life back into the shelter's surrounding gardens. Damon from AAPT had this to say about the day:

"Hi James, I just wanted to so thank you for the time yesterday, allowing us to come help you all at the RSPCA. I hope the plants grow well and make the place a bit brighter for the animals and also the people there to. Im still going though the info pack we were given and also taking in everything I saw and was told yesterday. Im going to miss the bacon sandwiches but nothing sentient needs to be treated like the way people treat the pigs [referring to www.choosewisely.org.au]. Anyway, thanks again to you and all the staff we had dealings with yesterday."

  Team Pepsico!

Thanks to Pepsico for another successful Corporate Support Day on 19 May.  10 staff participated in the normal days activities beginning with a talk from the RSPCA education department, then cat grooming and dog walking and planting a new garden. They took two very bare and ugly water tanks and planted 10 native Callistemon Hannah Rays and 10 Grevillea Bronze Ramblers at each tank. What an awesome achievement and the shelter keeps looking better and better!

Suncorp - 21 April 2010

Beautiful gardening work by the Suncorp team!  Beautiful gardening work by the Suncorp team!

We welcomed another great group from Suncorp on the 21 April who continued on with our plan to fix up all the garden beds in the new dog kennels. After hearing from our Education team and a visit from Inspector Slade and a rescued snake, the group split into two groups. One group then spends time dog walking / cat grooming while the other got busy on planting two rows of an Australian native shrub to shelter the dogs from noise and make the place more attractive for our staff and visitors. Then they swap. Thank you to Suncorp.

Paramount Pictures

Thanks to a fantastic group of 7 animal lovers from Paramount Pictures who visited us in Sydney on 14th April 2010. The group learnt about the RSPCA, helped socialise our animals by dog walking and cat grooming and then went down the road to our head office and did an incredible job sorting out our store room and helping the fundraising team. We can't thank them enough.

A fantastic and fun team of 10 from Westpac visited in March. Westpac spent the day with us and had a lecture on the work of the RSPCA, a visit from Inspector Slade and a rescued snake, learnt simple commands for dogs, did some cat grooming and still managed to squeeze in the planting of 30 Australian native shrubs: Westringia Fruticosa.

These shrubs will form a natural wall between the driveway and the dog cages which will dampen the noise the dogs hear, will help calm the dogs so they are not constantly distracted from coming and going and will make our Sydney shelter look that little bit better with a bit of nature.

Thanks again Westpac!
