Hens Deserve Better

Corporate Volunteer Days

These days are held at RSPCA Shelters surrounding Sydney i.e Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Nowra etc. They are sheer hard but rewarding work to improve the look and feel of our Shelters throughout NSW.

The day generally involves a shelter tour, animal socialisation and ground or building maintenance.

This day needs more arrangement as it is dependent upon the needs of the shelter and the availability of the shelter staff.

Booz & Company at RSPCA Katoomba Shelter - September 2011

Booz&Co

Booz&Co1

"On a cold rainy morning last week, a handful of eager staff from Booz & Company gathered in convoy to road trip up to the RSPCA's Katoomba shelter for a day of gardening and flower bed regeneration. Despite the rainy weather, our spirits were buoyed by the sight of several dogs at the gate (who looked pretty happy to see us too!) as well Kathy - the shelter's manager who did a great job of showing us around, providing us with the gardening gear that we needed and educating the team about the work of the RSPCA.

Thankfully the rain had stopped by the time we set into the day's activities - clearing sticks from the lawn for mowing, weeding and regenerating the flower beds. As we did our work, the shelter's staff came along with dogs to distract us (a good distraction!) and to chat about the animals.

After hours of work, the sun finally came out! Mez took us on a tour of the dog and cat shelters which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Overall it was a fantastic day in the mountains and we'd like to thank the staff, cats and dogs of Katoomba RSPCA for having us over!"

Suncorp Sydney at RSPCA Central Coast Shelter - June 2011

"Alex Black, Evonne Kudrynski and I work for Suncorp in Sydney in the TMF Support Services Team. On 17 June 2011, we attended the RSPCA Central Coast (Somersby) Shelter for our volunteer day.

Evonne and I walked about 3 dogs each, played with 4 kittens/ a couple of cats and cuddled 2 tiny puppies/1 dog.   Alex walked the large dogs all day (or rather they walked her!).

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  It was lovely spending the day in such a beautiful location, meeting the different animals and being outdoors.  One of the highlights was having lunch with a large goose.

We will definitely be back next year.“

Vodafone at RSPCA Central Coast Shelter - May 2011

RSPCA NSW would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the amazing team from Vodafone who braved the bad weather and headed up to the RSPCA Central Coast Shelter in Somersby and adjacent Cat Legacy House on Wednesday 25th May.  The team joined RSPCA staff James, Karen, Deb, Mark and Marianne for what was meant to be a day of light gardening and landscaping.  But the Vodafone team took it to the next level when they got down and dirty in the trenches – literally!  Not only did they mow, weed, hoe and whipper snip the Shelter’s sloping garden, they then dug out and reconstructed the ever important – albeit very overgrown - storm drain passage to the nearby dam.

The day’s work resulted in a skip full of debris, plus two additional piles that would later be collected and taken to the tip.

The day wrapped with a tour of RSPCA’s Cat Legacy House and some play time with the Shelter dogs.

The Vodafone and RSPCA team left wet, dirty and exhausted.  But everyone was extremely pleased with the outcome and the Shelter staff were sincerely grateful for Vodafone’s massive effort.

“Thank you so much for making yesterday possible.  The Team thought the Shelter and Legacy House were fantastic, and they were thrilled to help out!” said Vodafone Sourcing and Vendor Manager, Kylie Chain.

Dulux and Bunnings at RSPCA Sydney Shelter - August 2010

Dulux

On 25 August 2010 a team from Dulux and Bunnings (Bankstown Airport) put the finishing touches to the new dog behaviour assessment rooms at the RSPCA NSW Sydney Shelter. The team, lead by Keith from Dulux, put in a hard day’s work and the rooms have now been professionally decorated with washable paint. The team also donated all the paint and brought along all the necessary equipment. The rooms look wonderful and are already in use

These rooms are used to assess the behaviour of dogs needing new homes so are a very important part of our animal shelter. Thanks Dulux and Bunnings.

GHD Nowra - June 2010

Team GHD

On 5 and 12 June, seven GHD Nowra staff and their families managed to find a gap in the recent inclement weather to get a number of overdue jobs completed for the RSPCA Nowra Shelter, followed by a well deserved lunch. This was a great opportunity for local GHD staff to provide assistance to the community in a team building and family friendly environment. They erected 6 posts and sails in our dog exercise yard for shade in the summer, erected a sail over our pocket pet area and setup a long overdue chook house. The sails and posts were purchased by the local RSPCA Nowra Volunteer Branch, who also came out for a cuppa and a photo!

GHD is a National and International Engineering Consultancy company with more than 47 offices throughout Australia and in 16 countries globally. GHD Nowra has been in operation for five years.

An enormous thank you from Amanda Elleman, Nowra Shelter Manager and all at the RSPCA NSW.

Thank you so much to all the corporate volunteers from JB Were, Optus and Suncorp who helped us out before, during and after the Million Paws Walk on 16 May.

We cannot thank you enough!

Optus Sydney - October 2009

Optus Crew take on the Blue Mountains RSPCA Shelter

Photo above: The incredible team from Optus Sydney, with James Roden at front holding adoption dog Milly who was very excited to have visitors.

RSPCA NSW would like to sincerely thank the incredible team from Optus Sydney who joined RSPCA staff James, Karen, Kye, Kathy and Peter on a sunny Friday 16 October at the Blue Mountains Shelter in Katoomba. The teams mowed and weeded the garden at the shelter and left the garden looking radiant again. Not content with this job, the team excelled themselves by removing the old dog run fences – poles and all - at the front of the shelter and filled an entire skip with metal destined for the recycling plant!

The cost of this job without volunteers would have been in the thousands of dollars, so we greatly appreciate Sydney Optus for giving their time and resources to help our shelter. The plan is to turn the old dog run lawn into a Garden of Remembrance for much-loved, deceased pets and to make the shelter even more beautful to visitors looking for a new family member.

Stan Savellis – Call Centre Manager at Optus said this about the day:

“For us the Volunteer Day was a great team building experience, and at the same time a perfect and unique opportunity to feel like we are part of something… like we have contributed to something other than our own personal gain. Although my team and I were utterly exhausted afterwards, we’d all come back and do it again in a heartbeat. We can’t wait to see the finished product: the Garden of Remembrance! Thanks again!”

Mahnaz Naderi  - from the Optus team said :

“We all had a fantastic time and enjoyed our time in the RSPCA shelter in the beautiful Blue Mountain with very friendly staff.”
