How long can pets stay in the program?
The Pets of Older Persons (POOPs) program assists socially isolated elderly people by offering assistance with their pets. The POOPs program aims to keep pets and their elderly owners happy, healthy and together in their own homes for as long as possible.
What assistance is provided under the Pets of Older Persons (POOPs) program?
- Emergency boarding/temporary foster accommodation
- Regular worming and other health care as required
- Dog walking
- Transportation to vets
- Foster care
- Monthly home visits for flea control, bathing etc
- Grooming
- In home feeding of animals (short term).
- Adoption or rehoming (where possible) if client¡¦s situation changes
Who is eligible for the Pets Of Older Persons (POOPs) program?
- POOPs is specifically designed to help people 65 years of age or older who are socially isolated and require assistance with the care of their pets.
- Palliative care patients of any age who are socially isolated may also access POOPs services.
What does it cost?
Many elderly owners have financial constraints sometimes resulting in pets not receiving the care and treatment they may require. Depending on the service/s provided costs are kept to a minimum and in some cases are provided at little or no charge to the client. As with the majority of RSPCA services, no animal in need is turned away if owners are unable to pay fees, but surrender may need to be discussed as the best option dependent upon circumstances. Where possible, clients pay veterinary, grooming and boarding fees at the time of service.
All enquiries regarding fees for the POOPs program are to be referred to the POOPs team:

Albury RSPCA Foster care scheme operates according to policies and guidelines as set out by RSPCA Australia. Albury RSPCA has national support to ensure the safe re-homing of animals that come into care.
The purpose of foster care is to place into temporary care those animals that come into the possession of the RSPCA in areas where there are no Shelters.
The fostering of animals is an important and rewarding part of the work that Albury RSPCA undertakes and gives those animals, which might not normally be able to be rehomed, a wonderful start in life before moving on to suitable and lifelong homes.
Who Can Foster?
Anyone with a passion for animals. Considerations with suitable resources such as good fencing, are also needed, this includes the animals time requirements.
Albury RSPCA will provide all direct costs for the animal. Food, veterinary are and medications, bedding and grooming. You are not expected to be out of pocket, only your love and time is required, along with presenting the animal at it’s best for re-homing.
All dogs and cats are behavioural tested and vet checked prior to being accepted into foster care. You have the choice of a dog or cat that suits your family. Once a pet has been accepted into foster carer it remains in care until it has been rehomed. Animals can be rehomed in a matter of days, while others may take several months.
You also have the choice of moving animals onto another foster carer if you feel it has been with you for some time. If we are not able to find a loving home locally, than we have RSPCA state support to find a home elsewhere.
Rewards
Our Foster Carers are well looked after in the requirements of animal welfare. We offer training in a variety of areas and recognise the efforts made by our Foster Volunteers.
Not to mention the emotional rewards that fostering will provide when your fostered animals have found loving new homes and the continuing friendship this will bring. Imagine your own RSPCA photo album of re-homed pets.
Companionship
If you currently can not own an animal for some reason, but would love to have the company that an animal provides and help to save a life, than this is for you!
To determine rehoming suitability, all animals are behavioural assessed by a team of assessors (2 minimum) prior to being accepted into foster care.
Assessment times are scheduled at a time that suits assessors and owners. If you have basic dog or cat behavioural knowledge and are interested in being a trained as an assessor, we would love to hear from you.
The Albury RSPCA regularly holds a Thank You Day barbeque to express our appreciation to volunteers who provide unending and crucial support to the branch. We also invite families who have rescued our pets to thank them for adopting a rescue animal. The day provides a fantastic reward for foster carers to meet with their foster pet again and catch up with the new family.
The Albury RSPCA recognises that financially disadvantaged people such as pensioners can often not afford to desex, register and microchip their pets due to associated costs. As a consequence they may not afford to own a pet or not desex, register and microchip their pet. This can lead to an increase in unwanted pets due to indiscriminate breeding, compromised animal welfare of breeding females and their litters due to high frequency of pregnancies or being unable to locate their pets when lost.
Extensive fundraising has enabled Albury RSPCA to offer a subsidised desexing, microchipping and council registration program for the pets of financially disadvantaged residents within the Albury / Wodonga region, which is generally but not restricted to one hour of the region.
What is the cost of the program?
* Albury RSPCA will contribute by subsidising 40% of the total cost.
* Financially disadvantaged people will be required to pay 60% of the total cost associated with desexing females or males + registering + microchipping their pet/s.
* Participating vets are supporting the RSCPA program by providing approximately 20% discount on desexing and microchipping.
Who is eligible?
If you are a holder of a BLUE Pension Card or Low Income/Health Care card (excluding family tax benefit card) you may apply to the Albury RSPCA for the subsidised program.
