For many Australians a pet is an important part of the family. In fact, 63% of the 7.5 million households in Australia own pets.
RSPCA recommends you take the time to research the species or breed you are purchasing well before bringing it home. This way you can be positive your choice of pet will be appropriate for your lifestyle and you will be thoroughly prepared for its arrival. Purchasing a pet should never be an impulsive decision.
RSPCA shelters receive thousands of unwanted and abandoned animals each year, these are often the result of an ill-considered decision. Before you make the decision to become a pet owner ask yourself the questions in this brochure.

Do I understand how to care for a pet?
It is your responsibility, as a pet owner, to thoroughly research the basic requirements of your chosen pet.
• Do this before bringing your pet home so that you are well informed about the specific needs of your pet.
• Doing a quick internet search is not enough. You should look for a comprehensive book about your chosen species or breed and consult with an animal health professional.
Will a pet fit into my lifestyle?
Companion animals thrive on human company and will always depend on you. You should take into consideration your:
• Working hours (time for a walk /play?)
• Social life (are you out a lot?)
• Time away from home (with work or holidays)
• Are you prepared to walk your dog every day?
• Are you home often enough to keep your cat company?
• Who will care for your pet when you are away from home?
Do I live in suitable accommodation for a pet?
These are some questions you may need to ask yourself prior to getting a pet:
• Is your garden/yard big enough?
• If the pet is to be kept inside, is there a private space for their bed/toilet
• Is your yard fully enclosed?
• Do you live near a park /off leash area?
• If you rent, are you allowed pets?
