Fireworks, thunderstorms and Loud Noise Phobia safety

RSPCA NSW is urging pet owners to protect their animals from the noise of fireworks on Australia Day.

Local fireworks often frighten animals causing them to escape their homes in fear. Unfortunately many of these end up lost and injured - adding extra pressure to RSPCA shelters throughout NSW.

RSPCA NSW Chief Veterinarian Dr Magdoline Awad says owners should take extra precautions to ensure their pets are safe and unharmed.

“Dogs in particular are scared of the noise and often injure themselves while trying to escape and unfortunately many are killed,” said Dr Awad.

Pet owners should take the following simple precautions to protect their pets:

• Ensure pets are protected in a safe, secure environment either inside the house or in the yard
• Keep cats inside the house during the night
• Securely stable horses at a location away from fireworks noise
• Ensure pets wear identification and are microchipped with up-to-date contact details.
