Do you enjoy working with people, have customer service experience and want to use your skills to assist the RSPCA in helping animals?
The Sydney Yagoona shelter is the largest shelter in the Southern Hemisphere. We need outgoing customer service focused Volunteers to help customers with general enquiries upon entering our busy shelter, and to help them find the area or services they require.
The role involves meeting customers as they come into the shelter and directing them to the right place – the Cattery, Kittery Kennel areas, Veterinary Clinic or incoming animals. You will also assist customers with adoption process enquires
For those Customer Care Volunteers who also would like some additional animal contact, may choose to participate in the Open Paw training program in addition to their two hours customer care. This involves helping provide basic training and socialisation for the shelter animals.
Applicants for this role must be over the age of 18 years.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Proven Customer service skills and experience.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
Essential Criteria
- Able to get to the shelter by own or public transport
- Able to commit to a weekly set rostered shift
- Be committed to animal welfare and finding the right ‘forever home’ for our animals
- Basic animal handling skills with dogs, cats and small animals (this can include animals that you have helped take care of at home)
- Knowledge about responsible animal care, and the willingness to learn and apply the RSPCA criteria

Primary Responsibilities
- Meeting customers as they come into the shelter and directing them to the right areas and through the various processes
- Assisting customers with adoption process enquires
- Assist with general cleaning of foyer area throughout the shift
Selected applicants will undergo an interview for the role. The successful applicants will be required to attend an orientation/induction,as well as a briefing on animal handling prior to commencing their role.
If you have not visited the Shelter recently, please visit the shelter during opening hours before applying as it will give you an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the environment and give you an opportunity to determine if you will be able to travel weekly for a minimum of six months (particularly if you are coming via public transport, as there are limit public transport options).
This role is available on weekends only. We ask for a minimum commitment of 2 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months.
