All research or teaching activities which may have an impact on wild animals, including environmental impact surveys, observational studies and trapping for scientific purposes, must be carried out in accordance with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, including obtaining prior approval from an Animal Ethics Committee.

Wild animals must only be used for captive research or teaching purposes when the activity has the potential to benefit the species or ecosystem involved and there are no captive-bred specimens or other species suitable for study.
