Whalewatch
This year, over 1,500 whales will be slaughtered in the world’s oceans. Despite a ban on commercial whaling nearly 20 years ago, Norway, Japan and Iceland continue to kill whales using methods that date back to the 19 th Century.
‘Whalewatch’ is the campaign initiative of over 140 animal welfare organisations representing more than 55 countries worldwide which focuses on the inherent cruelty associated with killing whales.
The Whalewatch coalition, led by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), is calling upon the IWC to fully address the welfare problems associated with modern day whaling activities and recognise that the whaling debate is not just about animals and conservation, but also about animal suffering.
The International Whaling Commission (IWC)
The IWC was set up in 1946 to conserve whales and regulate whaling. This year there is immense fear that for the first time since the international ban on whaling was implemented, the pro whaling nationals will gain the majority of votes within the IWC.
