Armidale RSPCA

RSPCA Armidale covers the Armidale, Guyra, Walcha and Uralla communities. The branch members help raise funds, foster animals and find homes for them. We meet once a month to keep up to date with RSPCA developments and issues.

Armidale branch also has an honorary inspector, who helps the RSPCA’s New England area inspector deal with cruelty complaints. If you have concerns about an animal in the Armidale area, phone (02) 9770 7555. If you see a dog locked in a hot car please phone your local police. Click on the button at the bottom of this page for contact numbers.

We are active fundraisers who raise money to support the animals in our care and help raise awareness of the work of the RSPCA. Our main fundraising events each year are a trivia night and the annual RSPCA Million Paws Walk. We also have regular Adopt-a-Pet days. Once a month, we have a stall at the Armidale markets where we sell RSPCA merchandise, raffle tickets, talk about our role in the community and the animals we have for adoption.

In 2004 RSPCA Armidale ran a highly successful desexing program and we hope to make this a regular event.

What you can do to help

We are always in need of donations and we need animal lovers to become branch members and to help as volunteers.

You can donate food and old blankets, collars and kitty litter for the animals in care or you can volunteer to take dogs to Charlston Willows off-leash play area on Sunday afternoons. Dog walkers are also needed through the week and assistance with grooming is sometimes needed. Volunteers also take dogs to obedience training and transport them to and from Adopt-a-Pet days and to other events or to the vet.  Two volunteers are needed for the stall at Market Sundays and we also need people to answer the branch phone.

Answering the phone and checking messages are a vital part of the work of the branch. It involves referring people to appropriate services, such as the RSPCA inspectors and local wildlife carers.

Volunteers are also needed to collect donated food from food bins in IGA and Coles supermarket. The bins are emptied every two weeks and the food is taken to a central place for distribution.

You can also help with fundraising for the annual trivia night, selling raffle tickets or helping to organise the RSPCA Million Paws Walk. We need people with administrative skills to help prepare and distribute publicity and to do general administrative work. People with handyman or carpentry skills can help us build or repair kennels and cages.

RSPCA Armidale would also welcome people interested in becoming education volunteers. As part of our humane education program, you would speak to school children, teachers and local community groups to inform them about the RSPCA and about responsible pet ownership.

For more information on becoming a volunteer, please call Roswitha Hobson, RSPCA Armidale’s volunteer coordinator on (02) 6772 6217. You can also download a volunteer applicaion form.
