Have You Made Plans for Your Pets?

RSPCA NSW has many amazing programs that assist the community in making sure their pets are well taken care of – no matter the circumstances. One of these programs is our fantastic Home Ever After program, which focuses on finding new forever families for the pets of those who have passed away.

The Home Ever After program is designed to provide a safe system and place to go for animals when their owners have passed away. Any animal that is desexed, microchipped and has up-to-date veterinary records can be accepted into the Home Ever After program. Once the animal has been accepted, we provide their owner with a fridge magnet and wallet card to keep with them at all times, letting people know that they wish for RSPCA NSW to take care of their animals if they pass. We also encourage owners to let their friends, family and neighbours know of their wishes.

If the owner of the animal passes away, a friend, relative or lawyer will need to contact RSPCA NSW. From there, we will collect the animal and take them to one of our shelters to find them the perfect loving forever home as soon as possible.

If you wish to sign up for the Home Ever After program to make sure your pet is taken care of in the unfortunate event of your passing, there’s no need to add a Clause to your will explaining your wishes. By signing a contractual agreement with RSPCA NSW, we’ll make sure that your wishes will be honoured.

Signing up to the Home Ever After program, as well as the collection of your animals, is totally free. However, RSPCA NSW is a non-government funded and not-for-profit charity, meaning we rely almost entirely on the generosity of the public. If you’re thinking about using our Home Ever After program, please also consider leaving a gift to us in your Will. Once your pet has been accepted into the Home Ever After program, let family, friends and neighbours know that you would like RSPCA NSW to take in your animal in the event of your death.

RSPCA NSW will provide you with a notification magnet for your fridge and a wallet card to keep on you at all times. Both these items have all the necessary contact information for the Home Ever After program.

After you pass away, your friend, lawyer or relative will need to contact RSPCA NSW. We will then collect your pet as soon as possible and take him or her to our shelter. After that, we do everything in our power to find your animal the perfect loving forever home as soon as possible.

There’s no need to include a clause in your Will about the Home Ever After program. By signing a contractual agreement with RSPCA NSW, your wishes will be honoured.

Home Ever After is a free service. However, if you are thinking of using this program, we ask that you consider leaving RSPCA NSW a gift in your Will. As a non-government, not-for-profit charity, RSPCA NSW relies on the generosity of the public, with a third of our support coming from people kind enough to leave us a gift in their Wills.

A shelter can be a stressful experience for animals like yours who are used to the comforts of a loving home. We will therefore make every effort to match your pets with a wonderful new home as quickly as possible.

To ensure your pet finds the perfect home, RSPCA NSW always takes the time to interview any proposed new family to ensure they are a good match. Until that happens, we will do all we can for as long as it takes to ensure your pet stays happy, healthy and well cared for.

Yes. It is RSPCA NSW’s policy to conduct a thorough interview with any potential owner before we approve the adoption. This ensures the animal and family are a good match. We may also do a home visit and a follow-up check after your pet has been adopted.

If you have more than one animal, and want them to be rehomed together, please mention this in your interview. Although we cannot guarantee this will be possible, we will do everything we can to honour your wish and to do what is best for the welfare of your pets. If this involves your pets spending longer than necessary in a shelter, we would need to review the situation.

Cats and dogs are the focus of the Home Ever After program as we have the best capacity to care for them until they are rehomed. Spaces for larger animals such as horses and livestock can be limited. We do not take large birds such as cockatoos or parrots due to their long lifespan and difficulty in rehoming. We will consider other species on request.

The Home Ever After program should be used in the event that you have not made alternative provisions for your animal’s care. So if a friend or relative has offered to look after your animal, that’s wonderful. We may sometimes recommend this option if we feel that your pet would not benefit from the program.

Whilst in our care, your pet’s medical treatment will be covered. Having the financial means to provide for a pet as they require is a component of our adoption screening process, so once adopted, this will be the responsibility of the person who adopts your pet. The new owner will receive your pet’s complete medical history, and we will follow up after the adoption to ensure your pet is happy and healthy.
