When bringing a new dog into your home, there are many things you will need to consider. A good place to start is by taking your dog to the vet to ensure their vaccinations are up to date and to learn about the basics of caring for your furry friend. To help your dog settle in at home, it’s important to put regular patterns and routines in place. This may involve sharing animal care responsibilities among different members of your family.Â
Though meeting your dog’s every need can be a significant commitment, having a canine companion by your side can be an incredibly rewarding experience. If you’re looking to adopt a loyal fur friend of your own, consider adopting a dog or puppy from RSPCA NSW.Â
In NSW, you are legally required to have your dog microchipped and registered with your council. Your dog must also wear a collar with a tag which lists your contact details. The registration cost will vary, depending on whether your dog is desexed. If changing address, remember to update your details with your local council.Â
Additionally, as an animal guardian, you are responsible for bringing your dog to a veterinarian for vaccinations and regular health checks. Doing this once a year is equivalent to getting a human visiting the doctor once every five years. At home, you’ll also need to regularly treat your dog for fleas, ticks, and worms. It’s also important to keep your dog’s teeth clean. There are plenty of products and some dry foods that can help you maintain your dog’s oral hygiene and health. Â
There are also several plants and other common household products that are toxic to dogs. Familiarise yourself with these items to minimise the risk of your dog consuming a dangerous substance and avoid bringing toxic plants home. If you think your pet has ingested something they shouldn’t have, please consult a veterinarian immediately.Â
Remember, any changes in behaviour, defecation, drinking, eating, urination, or weight loss or gain should be checked out with a visit to the veterinarian. Today, there are many treatments available for a wide array of problems; even with conditions such as arthritis and diabetes, your veterinarian can advise you on the steps you can take to provide your animal companion with a safe and happy life.Â
RSPCA NSW Veterinary Hospitals can provide high quality care and support for you and your dog. From routine veterinary health checks to specialised surgeries, our veterinary teams can help you provide your dog with emergency treatment and essential support.Â

No matter what kind of animal companion you’re looking to welcome into your home, RSPCA NSW can help you find your perfect furry friend. Whether you’re adopting from one of our shelters, our adoption centre, or our partners at Petbarn, our wonderful team will be there to support you at every stage of your adoption journey.
Foster carers provide our wonderful animals with around-the-clock care and consideration, as well as a family dynamic our shelters aren’t always able to provide. Whether they’re nurturing orphaned kittens, treating dogs to an out-of-shelter vacation, or helping vulnerable smaller animals rehabilitate and recover, we strive to ensure our foster carers are supported.
Our dedicated shelters, veterinary hospitals, and rehabilitation facilities provide housing, treatment, and care for hundreds of animals every day. In addition to our primary facilities, our organisation further consists of volunteer branches and supporter groups. We also run a registered training organisation to help guide anyone looking to nurture their passion for animal welfare.
We know how difficult it can be to find the perfect canine companion. But with Competible, we can help you find your perfect furry friend, ensuring you adopt a dog that compliments your personality, lifestyle, and home.
No matter how excited you are to welcome a new member of the family, it’s important to take the time to plan and find an animal you can truly take care of. Adopting a new forever friend can mean adopting a companion for life, so ensure you understand their needs prior to adoption.
We aim to provide the best support to everyone who chooses to adopt. From general over-the-phone advice to behavioural or veterinary referrals, we have plenty of options available to animal guardians looking for support.
