Kennel Volunteer

RSPCA NSW is seeking volunteers to assist in the adoption kennels with cleaning, feeding, socialising and providing our puppies and dogs with environmental enrichment.

As a kennel volunteer, you will help provide exceptional care to dogs and puppies in our shelter, ensuring their wellbeing and minimising daily stress. RSPCA NSW will ensure that you receive appropriate training and will provide ongoing support to explore other opportunities within the organisation, if required.

Availability: Monday – Sunday

Times involved:  8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m

Location: Blue Mountains Shelter

Volunteer tasks and responsibilities

  • Assist staff with general cleaning of the kennels, including cleaning enclosures, sweeping, hosing and pooper scooping
  • Assist with feeds and feeding, including filling kongs
  • Observe animals for signs of illness and document observations
  • Change bedding, top up water bowls and wash bowls
  • Assist with grooming, brushing and bathing
  • Walking dogs and performing basic training
  • Undertake tasks to provide environmental enrichment for dogs and puppies, including providing toys, interactive activities, and play to invigorate their senses and help make their shelter stay as interesting as possible while they are awaiting their forever homes
  • Complying with all Work Health and Safety guidelines
  • Understanding and complying with RSPCA NSW policies and procedures

Check requirements

  • Experience handling large dogs (desirable)
  • Physical ability to lift up to 10 kilograms
  • Ability to follow direction and work in a team environment
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Reliable
  • Prepared to get a little dirty
  • Well organised, flexible and able to prioritise
  • Enjoys interacting with people and animals
