Shelter Assistant

As a RSPCA NSW volunteer Shelter Assistant, you can play a crucial role in providing care and support to the animals in our care. By helping us create a comfortable environment for the dogs who turn to us for help, you can contribute to their well-being as they await their forever homes.

Our shelter animals require company, enrichment, and daily care, which is why we’re looking for volunteers to give them the love that they deserve! This role is best suited to applicants who have previous canine experience, as well as those who flourish in a busy environment and love a hands-on approach.

Responsibilities and Requirements

As a volunteer Shelter Assistant, you can play a vital role in the care of our shelter animals. Your responsibilities will include working closely with our animal attendants to help with a variety of tasks like walking the dogs and cleaning their kennels. You’ll also assist with feeding animals and spending quality time with them, ensuring they’re well-fed and emotionally enriched.  

In addition, you’ll support our shelter staff by sorting and washing laundry and bedding, in addition to reporting any signs of illness or injury among our animals. You can make a lifechanging difference at our shelters and adoption centres, providing invaluable support for the animals who turn to us for help. 

To help us in the role, applicants must: 

  • Be at least 16 years of age  
  • Be able to lift 20kg  
  • Have previous animal care experience (highly desirable)  
  • Be able to cope with high level noise and in a busy environment  
  • Be confident in harnessing and walking a dog

RSPCA NSW rehomes a range of adorable animals, including cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, and more! We can help you find a forever friend at any one of our facilities. Becoming a foster carer is another rewarding way to help our animals. If you’re unsure about adopting but looking to personally assist our animals, become a foster carer to help give our animals the love and attention they deserve!

As a charity, we rely on a generous network of donors and supporters to provide any training, treatment, supplies, and rehabilitation our animals may require. Your contribution, no matter how small, can provide our animals with ongoing support, giving them a better chance at enjoying a good quality of life.
