Veterinary Nurse – Part Time – Hunter and Tighes Hill Veterinary Hospitals

The RSPCA is committed to the care and welfare of animals, providing extensive professional facilities, including fully equipped veterinary hospitals and our state-wide shelter network, with dedicated staff located throughout NSW to care for animals.

Our Hunter Veterinary Hospitals, located in Rutherford and Tighes Hill, are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced part-time veterinary nurse to join our dedicated animal care team three days per week. We are expanding and looking for a motivated individual who thrives in fast-paced and busy environments to assist with our increasing work load.

RSCPA NSW offers a fun, fast paced, hands on nursing role. Our nurses work in all areas of the hospital including designated ICU, Isolation and Recovery wards, so there is plenty of medical nursing and one-on-one patient contact. The nurses are responsible for all IV catheter placement, blood draws, anaesthesia monitoring, and dental scale and polish. We have a large team of experienced veterinarians and nurses who love to share their knowledge and experience, so there is always the opportunity to expand your skills and knowledge.

This position is on a part-time basis with shifts between 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. and will require the successful candidate to work on a seven-day rotating roster, including regular weekends and some public holidays.

Role responsibilities

  • General husbandry duties
  • Triaging incoming shelter animals and providing initial health assessments
  • Ensuring appropriate diagnostics are performed and results recorded
  • Maintenance of hygiene and adhering to infection control protocols
  • Administrating medication
  • Blood collection
  • Assisting in performing medical procedures and surgical procedures when required
  • Assisting with private consultations

Selection criteria

  • Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing – essential
  • Previous experience as a veterinary nurse
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Great team player
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and use initiative
  • Excellent animal handling skills
  • Good customer service skills
  • Ability to lift up to 20 kilograms
