Media Liaison – Full Time – Sydney Admin

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals NSW is Australia’s preeminent animal welfare organisation. We provide a strong voice for animals experiencing cruelty and neglect. The RSPCA is committed to the care and welfare of animals, providing extensive professional facilities, including fully equipped veterinary hospitals and our state-wide shelter network, with dedicated staff located throughout NSW to care for animals.

RSPCA NSW is looking for a dedicated and highly experienced media liaison to join our Communications Team on a full-time basis. The media liaison is responsible for securing proactive, strategic opportunities to build and maintain positive brand equity through media, public relations, communications and stakeholder engagement. This role plays an important part in collaboratively upholding the organisation’s approved messaging, calls to action, policies, positions and reputation.

The successful candidate will be required to work out of hours and occasional weekends.

Role responsibilities

  • Develop effective media and public relations strategies that maintain a positive brand profile
  • Identify areas of reputational risk and work with appropriate stakeholders to mitigate accordingly
  • Expand RSPCA profile in the government sector and in the wider community in areas that support the organisation’s strategic direction
  • Grow strategies that support and highlight the organisation as a global expert in animal welfare
  • Build and maintain strong, mutually beneficial relationships with business partners, the media and the community to position RSPCA NSW as an advisory, training and information service
  • Act as primary media contact for NSW and work collaboratively with subject matter experts and relevant spokespeople to maintain brand equity and consistent messaging
  • Manage the development and distribution of media releases, statements and promotional support materials that serve to communicate the organisation’s messages to decision makers, supporters and the public
  • Manage and develop the Media and Communications Coordinator

Selection criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in journalism, public relations, communications or relevant field (essential)
  • Minimum 4 years experience in media, public relations or communications
  • Minimum 2 years experience in people management
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and proactively
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly relevant to media and public relations
  • Demonstrated ability to speak in a public forum
  • Strong personal and work ethics
  • Ability to prioritise workload, work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Strong time management and organisational skills
  • High sensitivity to reputational risk
  • An interest in animal welfare
