Last week, our amazing Orange Supporter Group brought local animal lovers together for a heartwarming People and Pets Community Day. The positive effects of the event were felt by both pets and their owners, truly making a difference in the lives of all involved. Throughout the day, our team provided an array of preventative services, including microchipping, desexing, and even fresh ID tags for pets. In addition to ensuring their animals can stay safe and easy to identify, attendees were able to receive expert advice to keep their pets healthy, happy, and well-cared for.  The day was all about ensuring that tails were wagging, hearts were full, and pets were given the love and care they deserve. Even more touching was the generous donation of pet food to the local food pantry—because no pet should ever have to go without their meals. As Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches northern New South Wales, RSPCA NSW is urging the community to prepare and take immediate steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their animals. Significant impacts are expected along the NSW northern and mid-coasts, so it is critical to be prepared to protect all animals, great and small, from the cyclone’s impact.  “We know these extreme weather conditions can be stressful but if we take the time now to prepare inclusive and comprehensive plans, it can make all the difference to keep us and our animals safe and protected,” said Anne Keyvar, RSPCA NSW Emergency Response Manager.  RSPCA NSW is urging owners to ensure their animals have an emergency kit ready to go with food, including any special dietary requirements, water, and medication they may need to cover a minimum of 72 hours. After three decades of animal loving supporters coming together to fight animal cruelty, the RSPCA Million Paws Walk will be held for the final time ever on Sunday, 25 May 2025.  With the help of up to 1.6 million paws – that’s 400,000 superpooches -and more than 750,000 superhumans, Million Paws Walk events across the country have raised a phenomenal $17 million for animals in need over its 30-year history.  The RSPCA has made the difficult decision to hang up the leash on the event in appreciation of cost-of-living pressures and a dramatically changed fundraising landscape since the pandemic begun in 2020.    “The financial strain on families and increasing event costs has meant Million Paws Walk is no longer able to provide what it once could to the community while also effectively fundraising for much-needed RSPCA services,” said RSPCA NSW Senior Fundraising Manager, Phoebe Brasher.   “We want to unite animal lovers across NSW to join us for one last lap of the Million…

In 2024, an Inquiry was established to examine and report on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment (Virtual Stock Fencing) Bill 2023, which amends legislation to permit the use of virtual stock fencing (VSF) devices.  During the Inquiry, in both written submission and evidence before the Committee, RSPCA NSW explained that current scientific evidence highlights significant livestock welfare risks associated with virtual fencing. More research is required in non-cattle species, and in any event operational and technology-specific mandatory codes of practice must be established prior to any legislative amendment. To date, research has focused on the use of this technology in cattle and there is insufficient information available to support safe implementation in any other livestock species. Should the use of virtual fencing be permitted, contrary to the evidence provided before the Committee from multiple expert witnesses and despite these concerns, a statutory review period of 12 to 18 months must be legislated to avoid poor animal welfare outcomes…

On 29 June 2023, a Parliamentary Inquiry was established to investigate and report on pounds across New South Wales, focusing on a range of critical issues.   RSPCA NSW provided a detailed submission and gave evidence before the Committee, based on our extensive experience working with the Office of Local Government, pound facilities across the state, and fulfilling our enforcement obligations under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 (NSW) (POCTAA or the Act).   In our submission, we proposed 13 recommendations, including:  an urgent review of POCTAA, its associated Regulations and Codes of Practice,    the development and implementation of mandatory welfare standards for pounds and shelters,   increased resourcing for targeted, free desexing programs,  outreach initiatives in rural and regional areas, and   better support for semi-owners of cats.   We also emphasised the need for modernised council pound facilities, training for staff in animal behaviour and welfare, and addressing veterinary industry shortages to improve access to care and ensure the…

With summer officially on our doorstep and temperatures expected to soar this weekend, RSPCA NSW is urging pet owners to take the necessary steps to keep their companions as cool and comfortable as possible.

RSPCA NSW’s Foster Care programs provide temporary homes to animals who need a helping hand. This might be because these animals are too small or young to be adopted, recovering from illness or surgery, are undergoing rehabilitation or even just finding the shelter environment too stressful. Our foster care programs also support animals in regional locations that do not have RSPCA NSW facilities. By placing animals into foster homes, it provides them with the care and support they need until they are ready to be adopted into loving forever homes. While fireworks are a spectacular way to bring in the new year for us humans, the same isn’t true for our furry and feathered friends. Just like thunderstorms, the loud, unexpected noise of fireworks can cause extreme distress for our pets. This is why it is crucial to create a safe, calm environment, to prevent our loyal companions from hurting themselves or becoming lost in panic. “Dogs, like several other animal species, have sensitive hearing. We are thrilled to share some extraordinary news about our efforts in the Parramatta region, where we have successfully desexed 382 cats over the past two years through our Parramatta StrayCare initiative. This marked an important step in our Keeping Cats Safe at Home campaign. Our success has been made possible through our collaborative partnerships with the City of Parramatta Council, Ermington Vets, and dedicated local rescue groups. Together, we’ve carefully targeted our desexing program toward those who care for unowned cats and individuals who might feel overwhelmed by multiple feline companions. By offering support to these community members, we ensure that every cat has the chance for a safe and healthy life. The impact of this initiative has exceeded all our expectations. After just one year of implementing our desexing efforts, the intake at the council’s pound saw a remarkable decrease of 33%. RSPCA NSW acknowledges the recent social media attention surrounding a Google review detailing the euthanasia of a dog named Sophie. It is essential to clarify the following: In late October 2024, Sophie came into RSPCA NSW’s care through our Inspectorate as part of a large group of animals. These animals were seized from two people previously disqualified from purchasing, acquiring, taking possession or custody of animals for five years. Sophie presented in very poor condition and was severely fearful on intake, indicating a traumatic background. Sophie displayed very complex behavioural needs. Although she received significant veterinary and rehabilitation support from our team of vets and behaviour experts, she was unable to be made available for adoption and required further rehabilitation and support. Behaviour foster care was considered, but no suitable behaviour foster carers were available to meet her needs. Additionally, both of our behaviour and rehabilitation centres were at full capacity and unable to accommodate her transfer. Our Behaviour and…

On Tuesday, 22 October 2024, RSPCA NSW responded to an urgent request concerning 19 Staffordshire Terrier puppies brought into Taree Veterinary Hospital. With local councils unable to accommodate, RSPCA NSW staff, including an Inspector and members of the animal transport team collected the puppies (aged between six-eight-weeks old) and transferred them to the RSPCA NSW Hunter Veterinary Hospital in Rutherford. The puppies were found to be suffering from severe worm infestations and covered in ticks. One puppy required immediate veterinary care due to symptoms of tick paralysis and is now responding well to treatment. All 19 puppies are now under the care of RSPCA NSW and are receiving necessary medical attention. RSPCA NSW is calling on the community to open their hearts and homes by considering fostering one of these adorable puppies in need. With many families hitting the road with their pets in tow during the school holidays, it’s important to remember that there are easy steps we can take to ensure our animals stay comfortable and safe, all journey long. A comfortable journey starts with a comfortable space; for dogs, placing their favourite blanket or toys with them in the car will go a long way in making the travel experience feel as familiar as possible. This goes for cats and pocket pets as well, who will appreciate the comfort of their carriers that little bit more with the inclusion of a toy or piece of bedding that reminds them of home. If your pet is not used to travelling in a carrier, you can start to familiarise them with it in their space in the days leading up to your trip.
