Opened in February 1962 and originally named the RSPCA Dogs’ Home, the Central West Shelter has, over the decades, grown into a vital refuge for all creatures great and small—from caring for animals awaiting adoption to rehabilitating those rescued by our Inspectorate team.
For more than sixty years, the shelter has been a place of hope and second chances. Thousands of animals have been adopted into loving homes, reunited with their families, or given a fresh start—all thanks to a community that never stopped showing up.
While the physical shelter will close its doors tomorrow (12 June 2025), RSPCA NSW’s commitment to the Central West region remains strong. Through our Orange Supporter Group, Inspectorate services, and ongoing community outreach and events, our focus will shift to prevention and early intervention—helping people and animals before they reach crisis point.
“What made the Central West Shelter so special wasn’t just the bricks and mortar. It was the people. The staff, volunteers, foster carers, donors, and local supporters who gave their time, hearts, and resources to help animals in need,” said Central West Shelter Manager, Deanna Douglas.
From those who walked dogs in the rain to those who spent weekends fundraising, cleaning enclosures, or comforting an anxious pet—this shelter was built and sustained by your generosity and compassion. And for that, we are deeply grateful.
To the volunteers, staff, donors, foster carers, adopters, community groups, and supporters—past and present—thank you. You’ve made an extraordinary difference. The impact of your care lives on in every wagging tail, every purring companion, and every rescued animal that found love because of this place.
“It’s been an absolute privilege to be part of a place that has meant so much to so many. Every animal that came through our doors deserved a second chance, and thanks to the incredible support from our staff, volunteers, and the wider community, we were able to give it to them. While it’s hard to say goodbye, I’ll always be proud of the lives we’ve changed and the legacy we leave behind,” said Deanna Douglas.
Before our doors close, we have one final wish: that these three animals find loving homes locally. If you’re able to adopt, please consider welcoming one of these precious souls:
