After 39 years of operating in the community, RSPCA NSW has made the difficult decision to permanently close our Tweed Heads Op Shop
A combination of factors has led to this closure, including the property requiring significant refurbishments that are not financially viable and safety concerns for staff and volunteers during interactions with members of the public.
We understand that this store has long been part of the Tweed Heads community, offering affordable goods and raising vital funds to support our animal welfare programs. We are sincerely grateful to all those who have contributed their time, care, and energy to the shop over the years.
Despite the closure of our shop, RSPCA NSW encourages the community to continue supporting local op shops in the area and to donate responsibly. Please avoid leaving donations outside our closed store and instead take them to one of the many nearby op shops still operating.
To all staff, volunteers, and supporters, past and present, involved in the Tweed Heads Op Shop, thank you for your compassion and generosity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Tweed Heads Op Shop closing?
A combination of factors has led to this closure, including the property requiring significant refurbishments that are not financially viable and safety concerns for staff and volunteers during interactions with members of the public.
What safety concerns were there?
In the last 12 months, our Tweed Heads Op Shop unfortunately experienced a rise in safety concerns, including threats of physical violence toward staff and volunteers.
Will any other RSPCA NSW Op Shops be closing?
No, our remaining Op Shop at Port Macquarie remains operational.
What will happen to the remaining stock and equipment?
The remaining stock and assets from the RSPCA NSW Tweed Heads Op Shop will be transported and redistributed where possible. Arrangements are underway to redirect goods to our RSPCA NSW Op Shop in Port Macquarie, and to our colleague’s RSPCA QLD Op Shops in Queensland.
What about staff and volunteers?
All staff and volunteers have been notified about the closure.
Will RSPCA NSW still have a presence in Tweed Heads?
Yes. RSPCA NSW will continue to operate through our Inspectorate, community outreach programs, and regional work in Northern NSW. We are also excited to continue our partnership with Tweed Shire Council, as part of our Keeping Cats Safe at Home program, which has already seen a 25% reduction on free-roaming cats within the region.
What will happen to the site?
A decision regarding the future of the property will be made in due course.
